After a lifetime of connecting with nature, literally since I was a child, I picked up my husband's Canon AE-1 camera, took a beginner photography class at my local community college and discovered an adventure beyond my dreams. That was over 29 years ago, and I am still in love with nature photography!
One aspect of nature that is deeply calming and restorative is the presence of water. Whether it is the sound of waves, the sight of a flowing river, or the stillness of a lake, it’s no wonder that so many people feel instantly drawn to the oceans, lakes, and rivers for relaxation and inspiration. Studies suggest that being near water can lower stress hormones, improve mood, and even boost creativity. Our proximity to water - even fountains - has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, lower heart rates, and activate the brain’s default mode, which then enhances creativity and problem-solving.
The rhythmic sounds of water and the visual tranquility of lakes or oceans all contribute to a sense of calm and clarity. Water also fosters mindfulness, allowing people to feel more present and less stressed, which stimulates a more meditative, reflective state. Therefore, access to blue spaces is linked to greater happiness and lower anxiety, as well as higher productivity and satisfaction.
My inspiration for my fine art water photography is to create a body of work that people can bring into their home or office that conveys the tranquility and happiness of our blue spaces. To be able to contribute to a person’s well-being through the art of our oceans, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls is my passion. I feel a deep relaxation and inspiration when I am near water. I hope my art will bring you closer to a more positive mental and emotional well-being.
